Nicole Miller: An Introduction

Despite being a fashion enthusiast bride, no matter how much you know about fashion designer Nicole Miller’s popular wedding designs, that’s not enough. There’s so much more to know about this fashion industry icon. Let’s take a quick sneak peek into the life of this most-loved lifestyle transformer. Nicole Miller was born in 1952 in Fort Worth, Texas to a couple who met in World War II. Her father was an engineer at General Electric who was married to a Parisian-born lady. A great influence on young Miller, it’s her father, who she says, she has received an engineer-like mind which can turn any clothing into a masterpiece. Miller said, "The way you figure out how to make something is- engineering." Today she is worldwide known as an American fashion designer and businesswoman. Grew up with her sister and French dolls in Lenox, Massachusetts, Nicole, despite never owning a Barbie herself due to her French-influenced mother, designed a Barbie doll (Mattel toy company) which has been featured in an ongoing exhibit, Barbie: The Fashion Experience, at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis since December 2009. She earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in Apparel Design from Rhode Island School of Design. She also learned the art of fabric drapery and the classical method of dressmaking from L'École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne during her one year course there. She described the training sessions as “intense”, but the course gave much help in fabric manipulation, which soon became her signature style in her designs.

Nicole Miller: Professional Background

She started working as the chief designer at P.J. Walsh (manufacturer of dresses) in the early years of her career after finishing her internship with Clovis Ruffin (renowned dress designer) in New York. Bud Konheim, the company’s president, hired Miller obviously for her design and aesthetic sense, but also because Miller held the belief that business and design can be a winning combination. In 1982, Konheim and Nicole collaborated to start the Nicole Miller company. Nicole Miller designer opened her first shop on New York’s Madison Avenue in 1986 and launched her fashion line in the mid-1980s with a conversational print men's tie collection that remained a hit in the fashion world for a number of years. The brand later advanced into twenty boutiques in some major cities of America and started selling in several popular department stores as well.

Moving on, in 1996 she married Kim Tiapale (financier) in New York. The two have one son and allot their time between two neighborhoods of New York. She is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and is also among its board of directors. Moreover, she is an ardent collector of contemporary art as well as modern French furniture. Her personal art collection has works by Le Corbusier, Andy Warhol, Ellen Gallagher, John Stango, and Damien Loeb. Miller grabbed the headlines in September 1998 by introducing her spring 1999 clothing line one week ahead of her French counterparts, becoming the first American to do so. In 2002, Miller crafted costumes for ‘Blood Wedding’, a Houston-based Stages Repertory Theater production of García Lorca.

In a departure from designing adult fashions, Miller designed a Sesame Street line of clothing for babies and toddlers in 2004. She also created a line of makeup products for Melaleuca. In 2005, Miller started designing a line of affordable clothes, handbags, footwear, fashion jewelry, and other accessories for J.C. Penney. J.C. Penney attributes this collaboration to extensive customer input. Home furnishings also couldn’t remain untouched from Miller that she designs for Bed Bath and Beyond. In 2012, Miller joined the Fashion Advisory Board of Balluun.com, a fashion technology start-up focused on connecting fashion designers and retailers to conduct wholesale trade.
